a5c7b9f00b Undercover F.B.I. Agent Gracie Hart shows no signs of having any femininity in her demeanor or appearance. Generally a bright and capable Agent, she is in trouble at work when she makes an error in judgment in a case which results in a near disaster. As such, one of her by-the-books colleagues, Eric Matthews, who has never shown any inclination of thinking outside the box, is assigned to lead the high profile case of a terrorist coined The Citizen instead of her, while she is facing possible disciplinary action. Gracie pieces together the evidence to determine that The Citizen's next target will be the Miss United States beauty pageant. The pageant represents everything that Gracie abhors. Despite Gracie's mannish demeanor, Eric, with no other undercover female Agent remotely fitting the demographic, assigns her to go undercover as a pageant contestant to see if she can flush out The Citizen, who is perhaps one of the other contestants. Although the pageant administration, led by former winner Cathy Morningside and long time host Stan Fields, provide the F.B.I. with access to the pageant, Cathy in particular is less than thrilled to have a non-credible Gracie posing as a contestant, which she feels will ruin the pageant. The F.B.I. enlist the assistance of former pageant contestant coach Victor Melling, who is facing his own disgrace associated with the pageant, to do the nearly impossible task of transforming Gracie, not only into a woman, but a credible beauty pageant contestant. As Gracie proceeds in the transformation, she gets to know the other contestants, not only as potential criminals, but also as real people. She also discovers that another sinister element is present at the pageant. She will do whatever it takes to quash that element and protect her new friends, namely the other innocent contestants. But now displaying some femininity, Gracie begins to have more womanly feelings, and in turn, attracts the attention of men, one in particular about whom she is happy.
When a serial killer indicates that his next target is the Miss United States beauty pageant, the F.B.I. decides that they must get an undercover Agent as a participant in the contest. A search uncovers no suitable candidate other than a bumbling female Agent. Reluctantly, her Captain agrees to let her join the team working the case. The team is led by a womanizing Agent who has an apparent reluctant attraction to Bullock's character. She enters as Miss New Jersey, replacing a contestant who was discovered to have acted in a porn movie. The pageant managers are immediately aghast about the Agent appearing in the pageant, but arrange a top handler to come give her a quick make-over, with the expected outstanding results. Unfortunately, she still is bumbling. When the killer is suddenly caught, everything seems to be over, except the female Agent tries to convince her boss that something is still not right. She has discovered that the pageant managers are being dismissed after twenty-one years for younger people, and Bergen's character may not be as solid as she seems on the surface.
This film was great for a laugh and provided a good escape from reality for awhile. Sandra Bullock finally got another great role that she played to the T. The romantic aspects were a little weak but all in all it's a great date movie and a guaranteed renter for a rainy day laugh.
Lighten up, all ye naysayers – this isn&#39;t Citizen Kane, it&#39;s a breezy comedy and one well worth your time.<br/><br/>Sandra Bullock won me over as an actress in Hope Floats; since that movie she has done good work in Gunshy, 28 Days and now Miss Congeniality. Though she doesn&#39;t have much of a speaking voice (I do wish she&#39;d work on her shrill tones), she throws herself into her roles, doing admirable work even when the script is so-so. Even her voice is perfect in Miss Congeniality, where, as a dorky FBI agent impersonating a beauty contestant from &quot;New Joisey,&quot; she nails nerdiness to a T. Her snorty laugh alone is enough to elicit snorty laughs of your own. And wow, can she kick ass!<br/><br/>This is a fun flick, the best movie about pageants since Smile (though Smile is more of a &quot;meaningful&quot; comedy). No meaning here, just a light entertainment that will give you a well-deserved therapeutic break from your stressful job, the American electoral process, or whatever. See Sandra play the water glasses while dressed like Heidi, see Sandra be transformed from nerd to goddess, see Sandra feed pizza to reluctant anorexics, see Sandra rock!
Miss Congeniality would not be out of place as a TV series, so it makes sense that Candice Bergen and William Shatner appear as pageant co-hosts.
Tomboyish FBI agent Gracie Hart (<a href="/name/nm0000113/">Sandra Bullock</a>) is forced to go undercover in the Miss United States beauty pageant to prevent a terrorist known only as &quot;The Citizen&quot; from bombing the event. Miss Congeniality is based on a screenplay written by Marc Lawrence, Katie Ford, and Caryn Lucas. It was followed by <a href="/title/tt0385307/">Miss Congeniality 2: Armed &amp; Fabulous (2005)</a> (2005). &quot;Lara&#39;s Theme&quot; from <a href="/title/tt0059113/">Doctor Zhivago (1965)</a> (1965). The lyrics begin &quot;Somewhere my love there will songs to sing…&quot; When Gracie hears that Frank (<a href="/name/nm0598569/">Steve Monroe</a>) has taken the crown to get polished, it dawns on her that he is planting the bomb in it. As Stan (<a href="/name/nm0000638/">William Shatner</a>) begins to read off the names of the runners-up, Gracie tries to alert Eric (<a href="/name/nm0000973/">Benjamin Bratt</a>) but she can&#39;t be understood amidst the clamor and excitement on stage. Fourth runnerup California, third runnerup Nebraska, second runnerup Texas. Gracie is named first runnerup, leaving the crown to Rhode Island. When the crown is placed on Cheryl&#39;s (<a href="/name/nm0122688/">Heather Burns</a>) head, Gracie attempts to rip it off, making everyone think that she is a sore loser trying to steal the crown. In the ruckus that follows, Eric knocks out Frank who drops the detonator onstage, Kathy (<a href="/name/nm0000298/">Candice Bergen</a>) picks it up and detonates the bomb just as Gracie gets the crown away from Cheryl and tosses it in the air, blowing up the Statue of Liberty instead. Kathy and Frank are arrested, and Eric and Gracie agree to go out on a date when they get back to New York and Gracie &quot;gets all ugly again.&quot; Just as Eric and Gracie are about to leave in a taxi, Victor Melling (<a href="/name/nm0000323/">Michael Caine</a>) comes running out of the hotel, yelling about an incendiary device being spotted in the farewell breakfast room. Gracie runs back inside, only to find that she has been honored by being voted Miss Congeniality.
